It has been over 20 years since
Prof Illouz first implemented liposuction in France and it has being studied
in America as being capable of bringing great benefits for diabetic people
or high blood pressure patients.
Plastic surgeon Sharon Giese, from Georgetown University, followed 14 women
with corporal mass equal or superior to 27 – this is obtained by dividing
the weight by the height squared. For example, the corporal mass of a woman
measuring 1,60m and weighing 70kg is 27. The normal rate varies between 18
and 24,9. All women that went through liposuction had their weight reduced
in 5,5kg approximately, leading their corporal mass to drop from 29,1 to 26,8.
What really impressed researchers was the drop on the level of the blood sugar.
This measures the risk of a person developing diabetes. Before liposuction,
8 of the women studied were in a pre-diabetic stage. After the procedure,
all women had normal levels of insulin and low blood pressure.
The complete results have not yet been announced, but Giese certifies that
all patients kept the results after one year of the operation.
The researches between the relation of liposuction and blood pressure will
go on.
The American government, worrying about the alarming levels of weight-related
diseases, is investing large sums of money in the study of the benefits liposuction
can bring to health.
It is not all clear how liposuction alters the chances of a person having
diabetes; one of the theories states that fat cells have insulin receptors,
and the removal of large amounts of those cells affects how the body controls
insulin.
An important fact is that fat cells multiply up to puberty and after that
its number is stable for the rest of life; with the surgery a great number
of cells are removed explaining why people do not fatten up again in the liposuction
regions.
If the studies in progress have scientific confirmation, this procedure will
no longer be aesthetic but will have health implications. People will be diagnosed
for a liposuction by doctors to restore good levels of sugar and blood pressure.
I have treated in my clinic over the last few year patients with joint problems
that with liposuction, unpleasant pain disappears and they can walk normally
again.
