Female Baldness Treatment

Female hair loss is unacceptable in our culture for people believe this is a man’s disease.
Because of it, 70% of bald women are inhibited with the situation while only 25% of the male population that present baldness feels this way. Although it is more difficult, only one woman in five could develop alopecia during her life. Not so long ago the treatment for women was very scarce; with the arrival of new techniques of micro transplant both physician and patient are very pleased with the results.

Women hair falls differently as in man. In males it happens by progressive balding of the crown of the head and the forehead, whereas in women hair loss mostly affects the crown.
Diagnosis of the female baldness is hard and it involves many lab tests such as: dosage of testosterone, iron, thyroid, prolactine, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone – it is most common not to find anything wrong with the tests, leading many doctors to perform biopsies of the scalp trying to find a cause for the baldness.

The female alopecia, as said before, manifest at the central part of the head (crown) and only after menopause it progresses to the forehead, as in man.
For surgery, the density of the hair on the donor’s areas (post head) is taken into consideration. Surgery with scarce hair in these areas is faded to fail. Hair color is also taken into consideration; light hair gives the impression of a full scalp.

The surgery in women consists in transplanting follicles to an area with less hair. Hair loss is inevitable in the transplanted area, and it should be thoroughly discussed with the doctor before the procedure; the modern micro-implants technique, instead of the old circles transplant, does not harm the preexisting follicles, encouraging the full growth of the hair lost during the procedure.

With all this said, the hair lost during the transplant is always a great concern of our patients and we have made part of the treatment daily applications of Minoxidil 5%, twice a day for 6 months before the surgery.

Conclusion – because of the great advances in medicine, pre-selected women can submit themselves to the micro transplantation of follicles with very encouraging results
